Hi there,
I'll be going to Tibet and Nepal on the 25th June for your Tibet Expolorer trip. I was wondering what I would need to take?? I have no idea what kind of weather to expect. Being at 5,000 m HAS to be cold... but then agian what do I know? Would a sleeping bag be in order? Would it be shorts'n't-shirt or trousers'n'fleece? Or both?? I know you advise to travel light on your dosier but how light (ie in kilo's) would you recommend? I take it as red that a good pair of walking boots will be essential. Also, I'm no Chris Bonigton and so have only been upto about 2000 m but never upto 5,500 m before and am considering taking Diamox with me just incase the altitude sickness kicks in... good idea or not?
Cheers
Tom
Ps. I'm REALLY looking forward to going. Should be amazing!!

Re: Tibet - what to take
Hi Tom,
Sorry it has taken so long to get around to replying.
The person who would normally have responded is currently researching new trip and is out of internet reach. (Yes there are still some places where you can escape)
You'll be visiting Tibet at the warmest time of year, so the days should be hot.
However, being at altitude, the nights will almost certainly be cold.
Therefore you need to be prepared for both.
Shorts & T shirt should be fine during the day but you will almost certainly need a fleece in the evenings and long trousers may be good too.
You will not need a sleeping bag.
The most important consideration for your footwear is comfort. There is no hard trekking on this trip just walking, so lightweight hiking boots or even heavy duty trainers (they seem to be almost the same thing these days) will be fine.
Travelling light really just means taking what you will need, don't overpack.
For example, you can get lightweight walking trousers which convert into shorts. A fleece is better than a sweater as it is lighter.
As for the Daimox. I regret that we are not qualified to give advice on medication. It will be best to speak to your GP. He/she will be the best person to give you an opinion on how you may be affected by the altitude and whether they consider it a good idea for you to take a supply of Diamox. We do not keep any stocks of Diamox ourselves so we will not be able to supply it to you in Tibet.
Bear in mind that the trip does allow time for acclimatisation.
I'm sure you'll have a great trip.
