Hello Chris,

If & when I ever get to make a return visit to Egypt I was hoping to see a whirling Dervish. I have heard/read somewhere, you are able to see a display somewhere in Cairo. Is this true? Would you mind findind out any information at all for me, please??

Hope I haven't made a difficult request, but this is one of my "must do's" if & when I ever get the luck to return! The way the aussie dollar is at the moment I'll be too darned old to enjoy myself!

Thanks Chris, keep up the good work.....wish I had your job.......perhaps not , as I guess you're stuck in an office in England.......I'd rather be in Egypt! All the best

Re: Whirling Dervish?

Hi Debbie,

Good to hear from you again.

There is a display of Whirling Dervishes but not in Cairo. You can go to the Sufi dancing show at El Ghouri palace in Khan El Khalili.

This show is on every Saturday and Wednesday at 8.00pm and is free of charge. It lasts for about an hour.

Re: Whirling Dervish?

Hi Chris,

Thanking you for that information. What can you tell me about Sufi dancing? Is it similar to the Whirling Dervish?

I was also interested in seeing a good belly dancing display, do you have any suggestions? It would need to be somewhere I could go to on my own as I will more than probably be travelling alone again. Hubby won't fly......

Once again thank you for your assistance, it's much appreciated.

Re: Whirling Dervish?

Hi Debbie,

Sufi dancing is the same style of dancing as seen in the Whirling Dervishes celebration but in the format of a show rather than a celebration.

If you're keen to see belly dancing and you're on your lonesome it would probably be best for you to go on one of the cruise ships in Cairo. The cruise takes around two hours, you'll get dinner, Sufi dancing, Belly dancing and no harassment. The best cruise boat is the Nile Pharoe boat. The evening will cost you around 85 L.E.

Re: Whirling Dervish?

Hi Debbie ,

I know from the traveller forums that you love Egypt but when I read your interest seeing Whirling Derwish performance and belly dancing why not come to Turkey.

The origin of the whirling Derwishes sect is Konya and in December we have a festival tour visiting Konya and see the real performance from the real derwishes. Also even the original spot for belly dancing is middle east ,you can see good belly dancers in Turkey as well.

Hope to see you in Turkey

Re: Whirling Dervish?

Hello Yavuz,

Don't worry I have plans to visit Turkey one day!! It is a must do when money & time permit.

My grandfather survived the landing at Gallipoli, some day I would like to see this area with my own eyes.....but not on Anzac day as I don't think I could handle the crowds!

Would also like to visit the hot springs I have seen photo's of here.

So perhaps one day I will arrive on your shores & get to see the Whirling Dervish , Belly Dancing & all the other sights of your country.

Perhaps you could keep in touch with me? If you go into my profile you'll find my email address. Take care & maybe we'll meet oneday .....God Willing.

Re: Whirling Dervish?

In December, while in Cairo after a wonderful Sailtrek/Sinai tour, our tour leader, Oscar, took our entire group to the Sufi Dancing, (which sure seemed like Whirling Dervish to us), at El Ghoui Palace in Khan El Khalili. It was a magnificent display both from a musical point of view and the incredible dancing. It was truly a highlight of the trip and we only have Oscar to thank. Without him taking us there, we would have not known about such a great entertainment. Going to this is highly recommended if it can be fit into one's schedule.

Re: Whirling Dervish?

Hi Aileen & Paul,

I'm pleased to hear that you enjoyed the display, it's something I've wanted to see for a long time .....didn't have time to see it when I was in Egypt 2 years ago. But intend to make up for that on the next visit!

Perhaps other people may be interested? I believe it would be a marvellous sight to behold.

Thanks again..........I can't wait to see this for myself!
