HI, we are going on the Rajasthan Safari in January.I was wondering about a few things, from anyone who has been on this tour. First, what have people found are the best pants to wear while riding the camels. We never take jeans on our trips..too heavy and hard to dry...opting instead for light cotton pants. But we are wondering what makes sense on the camel rides, and whether jeans might not be preferable, or whether the cotton pants will do.

Secondly, I see someone has recommended taking pillows/padding for the ride. Any suggestions as to what type of pillow and how one keeps them attached to the saddle?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Pam

Re: Camel rides in India

Hi Pam,
you're probably there already but this is for the benefit of anyone camel riding in the future.

Suggested wear - leggings/yoga type trousers. they are lightweight but won't chaff as they are made out of teeshirt fabric. Take a sarong or large tie-on hat as you're in the sun for 2 full days and one of our group got lightly sunstroked as she was insistent on tanning - and we were there in Decmeber when it's winter. Wear sensible big knickers - two girls on my trip wore gstring/thongs and it was nasty! They went commando from day 2.

Men should either take some soft padding or be prepared to walk some of the time alongside the camel (they go slow and the ground is mostly firm so it's no hardship)or learn to ride side saddle like the camel owners do as the camel saddle has a lumpy protrusion right where their manly bits are.

Personally I loved the camel ride but most of the others viewed it as a one off experience.

Re: Camel rides in India

Hi Pam
Re camel ride - I wore long cotton pants which proved to be very comfortable and a long sleeved linen shirt over a sleeveles top as sun protection and they worked well as insect protection at night. Don't forget a shady hat that protects the back of your neck. If it is not too cold at night - drag your mattress out of the tent and sleep under the stars - don't forget to make a wish - there are lots of falling stars to be seen in the desert sky!!! I loved the camel safari because it it is so well organised and your comfort is important to the staff - if not to the camels!!! If you should need a cushion I am sure the camel drivers can provide you with one one that is appropriate - but you are not on the camel for anything longer than 2 hours at a time. Enjoy !!!
