Re: china customs
HI Sally,
The Chinese people and government are now welcoming visitors with open arms. The restrictions that you mention were lifted many years ago and entering China now is very straight foward. You will just need to fill out a very simple arrival card which will be checked along with your passport and Visa by an immigration person. After that, your luggage may be scanned to check if you have any dangerous articles. Then you just walk out and discover a fascinating country. I hope to see you here.
Happy travels

Re: china customs
Hi Sally,
I've been to China in 1999, and getting past immigration and customs was very easy. They checked briefly my arrival card, passport and visa and within a minute my holiday began! They even didn't scan my luggage, and I certainly didn't need to declare any valuables. As Alf from Imtrav is saying, the Chinese don't want to scare visitors away. Altough the arriving Chinese locals had a harder time getting past customs...
Of course you need a valid visa, otherwise it's far more difficult (if not impossible)!
Have a great time in China!
Robert.
