I have just finished a book called "River Town. Two years on the Yangtze" by Peter Hessler (published 2001). It is about an American guy teaching for two years in Fuling (1996-1998). It has really opened my eyes in to Chinese culture and prepared me for my China Explored tour in October. I couldn't put the book down and I can't believe how ignorant I was beforehand of the Chinese and China. I would recommend this book to everyone. It is really humourous too.

Re: A great book for China
Hi All,
While we're on the subject, I can heartily recommend the following:
"Shopping for Buddhas" by Jeff Greenwald, published by Lonely Planet. A great travellers eye view of Kathmandu and a valuable insight into Buddhism without all the scholarly text.
Anybody else know what we should be reading next?
