Hi Jaxer
My hubbie & I are booked on this tour too.
We did Egypt-Jordan Caravan with Imtrav in December 2002. It was brilliant so we can't wait for June to come around for this one.
Catch you in Beijing.
Sonja.

Re: journey across china 14th june
thanks for your reply brendan. i did the inca trail last year and found it pretty tough going at altitude. i have been doing some walking but was mistakenly under impression that this trek would not be too difficult. how hard is tiger leaping gorge compared to inca trail?

Hi Jaxter,
We actually arrive on 13 June. We are planning a bit of sightseeing before the tour - need to stretch our legs after the long flight!
We aren't getting too stressed about the trek, we figure we do a fair amount of walking anyway. We are having more difficulty deciding if we should take our Scarpa boots or some lighter shoes.
Not long now anyway - less than 6 weeks. It can't come around fast enough.

cheers brendan. dunno if i would exactly say i had no difficulty with the inca trail, there were times i was tempted to pay the helicopter ambulance to airlift me out, but i did make it nonetheless with sheer guts and determination. does tiger leaping gorge involve as many steep inclines/steps or is it flatter/gentler slopes?(or is that just wishful thinking)

Re: journey across china 14th june
thanks dirk - i feel reassured by your comments about the trek. you said it was hot/humid when you were there - i am going june/july and thought it would be cold and rainy in the south western area. i was planning on bringing a fleece/warm clothes for the trek but are you saying i won't need cold weather gear for china??? did you need any other stuff such as sleeping bags? (i was recently in hanoi in feb and it was really wet and cold and i wasn't prepared for those weather conditions). roughly how long does the steep bit of the trek take? 1-2 hours, 3-4 hours.......or longer???????

Re: journey across china 14th june
Just got back a few weeks ago from the "Journey across China". The Tiger Leaping Gorge trek is not as bad as the Inca trail, but it does have its steep parts. There is a bunch of climbing on the first day. On the second day there is a very steep part at the start, but if you start out early you can complete that part before the sun comes out, which is a good idea. One the third day, there is a long flat slog along the road, and to be honest I would try to hire a car from Shawn (or someone) and go BACK though the gorge on the low road (just to see it from there), then double back and meet up with the other hikers before they get to New Town. Oh, and to see our photos from the trip, click here: China photos
