My travel agent told me I got the last spot so it must be full. I'm in vacation deprivation mode and it won't come soon enough. I get into Beijing on the 8th and hope to catch the Summer Palace or something before the tour starts.

I am not arriving till the afternoon of the 9th I am afraid - I think I made a mistake not trying to get out earlier - but getting extra days holiday was a problem! See you on the 9th.

Me and Philip are booked on the Beijing to Kathmandu tour. I think that for the China part, we will be travelling with you. We got good priced flights with Austrian airlines, but we arrive on 6 September. We haven't organised accommodation for our 3 pre-tour days yet - but may stay at the Aihua hotel since my guides hint that it has some character. (I rang the Aihua and nobody spoke English, so I got my friend Suping to talk to them. The staff burst out laughing when they realised I was trying to book three weeks early. Said we should just turn up or call a day or two before).
Going to spend our early days getting to know the transport system, visiting the non-tour sights, eating (of course), browsing the more interesting markets, practising our v. poor Mandarin ("hello", "thank you", "I'm a table") on passers-by and watching the Tai Ji in Tiantan park. May bump into you at the Summer Palace, Keith.

Just say where, when and what - and remember to leave time for recovery from your flights!

I'm staying at the Tiantan (sp?) hotel, where the tour starts, for my extra night so could meet up the evening of the 8th (I may need a jetlag nap that aft.) to plan a day of exploring before the tour meets on the evening of the 9th.

How about 8pm in the foyer of the Tiantan? (Hope there's only one foyer - the photos of the hotel make it look like a small metropolis...). Name another time if that's too early or late for you. We'll be the couple holding a Beijing metro map upside-down.
