I have been to Japan and it is a fantastic country so you will have a great holiday. I would take a "soft" piece of luggage and not too big as the bullet train doesn't have much room on it for suitcases, so I wouldn't take a framed backpack. Most of the walking on this trip are optional extras unless of course you are climbing Mount Fuji. For these excursions you will need a day pack for essentials whilst your main luggage will be left at the hotel.

I'm really looking forward to the trip, yes I will be (weather permitting) going to the top of Mt. Fuji and Yufuin!
I know that the "traveller" type of rucksack is really bad for your back having no stiffened support for your spine, but if it is only going from the hotel to whatever mode of transport it should be fine. Now all I have to do (apart from save enough spending money) is get used to the idea that I will not be taking 15kgs or more of cameras, tripods and lenses...

Guys I've been on several of these trips and the best advice is to travel as light as you can. Any serious walking your going to do will be when your bags are back at the hotel.

The Empire of the Sun trip is tremendous too. You will love it.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your account of the tour, and the photos gave me a feel for the tour.
