Hi,

I'd like to know, what currency to bring to India - US$ or GBP? Also do I have to exchange it for rupees, while in India or is the foreign currency widely accepted in the shops, restaurants, etc.?

Re: Money - India

Hi Zuzana,

We recommend that you carry the main part of your funds (70%) as travellers cheques for security reasons (USD and GBP will be fine).

If you bring in cash it should be of a major currency (again USD and GBP will be fine). You can't actually bring Indian Rupees into the country or take them out. You should also be aware that many people will not accept torn or damaged notes.

There is a black market for currency exchange but it is illegal and we don't recommend it.

When changing your money into rupees, try to get some lower amounts. The first time I went to India, I had all larger bills, making it difficult and time consuming to purchase quick snacks and cheaper gifts. Also, smaller bills come in handy for rickshaws and tipping.

Re: Money - India

Dear Zuzana,

I am an Indian and from Jaipur,Rajasthan, India. I am a freelance Tour-Escort and have a good Experience with Tourists & Travellers here in India. I would recommend you to bring 70% - 80% of your Money as Travellercheques and some cash in USD/GBP. Travellerscheques,USD,GBP & CreditCard (MasterCard, VISA, American Express) are widely accepted by Shops & Restaurants for Tourists in India and therefore there is "NO PROBLEM" at all. You can get exchanged your Travellercheques, USD or GBP at many places in citycenters and around the Touristic Places(Monuments, Museums etc.). But I would recommend you to get it exchanged only at authorised Money changer and to check the Exchange rate of that day before exchange,as the Exchange rate get changed everyday.I am always available to help you if you need any. I wish you Happy Journey and unforgettable experiences in INDIA.
