Hi, I'm going to Ladakh in August for nearly 3wks. I've been advised that malaria preventatives are no longer necessary for most of India. However i'm unsure as to whether to shell out for Hep B, Rabies & meningitis jabs. The risk seems to be higher if you're away for longer. Any advice?

Re: vaccinations for India

Hi Paula,

Thanks for your question.

I'm afraid we are unable to give any medical advice and this includes malaria. In my experience if there is much doubt about whether to take anti-malarial protection doctors and health officials will lean on the side of caution and recommend that you take them so the fact that they have not insisted that you take them is a good sign.

It remains admittedly a bit of a grey area and the best source of information is indeed the advice received from medical professionals through the NHS. The trouble is that you'll probably find that half of your group do take precautions against malaria and half do not, as has been the case on a couple of tours that I have done over the past year or so.

I hope this helps

Regards,
Brendan
