hi,
Im really interested in going on the Indochina Adventure trip during the beginning of next year, but I'm quite concerned about this avian flu outbreak...does anyone know if any precautions are taken by the company, i.e. do we avoid live poultry markets? Also, all the information I've heard about it has been in the press so does anyone know how serious it actually is and whether it should prevent someone from travelling to Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia?
Thank you
sara

Re: avian flu concerns
Hi Sara
Thanks for your post.
We do of course take all aspects of safety very seriously, and this includes monitoring events such as the emergence of avian flu.
Since 2003, bird flu has killed a total of 60 people in Asia - most of them poultry farmers. Although any illness, if it gets out of control, is dangerous, at the moment it does seem that with such a low proportion of casualties, avian flu is extremely unlikely to affect any of our travellers.
There aren't really any specific precautions that a travel company is able to take against this, but we don't specifically visit poultry markets - for one thing, they tend to hold limited appeal for travellers! It is of course always likely that in a country like Thailand, travellers can come into contact with chickens or other live birds in the streets. However, the World Health Organisation advises that the disease does not spread easily from birds to humans and that:
'Though more than 100 human cases have occurred in the current outbreak, this is a small number compared with the huge number of birds affected and the numerous associated opportunities for human exposure'.
As mentioned above, we do look at things like this carefully, but at the moment we don't think that this will affect any of our trips, and believe that it certainly shouldn't put people off travelling to South East Asia.
I hope that this helps. If you have any more questions then please let us know.
Re: avian flu concerns
if you check the foreign office website they give advice for travellers. It is also of benefit to print of their advice when you book your tickets so that it makes it easier to make an insurance claim if travel restrictions change.
