My friend and I are booked on the bangkok-singapore tour 31 July. Wondering if anyone else is booked to do this tour? Also, wondering what the accomodation is like, including the trains, and do we need to take our own towels etc. Also, what is thai food like - I have heard varied reports!!

Re: bangkok - singapore
Hi, Thai food is absolutely delicious!! It is also very cheap to eat in Thailand...Last year while I was in Thailand, I took a Cooking Class in Chiang Mai, so I could come home and cook it...It was great...There is lots of curries, coconut milk, chili peppers, seafood, lemongrass, etc, etc,...I can't answer the rest of your questions because i haven't been on that tour....May favorite Thai food is Tom Yam Goong (spicy shrimp soup with lemongrass), glass noodle salad, pad thai, just to mention a few...Give it a chance, and maybe check out a Thai restaurant in the city you live in just to learn more about it....It is way tastier in Thailand though!!
Re: bangkok - singapore
My boyfriend and I did the tour last summer and it was amazing. You'll have a wonderful time. The accommodation is very basic, but clean. Staying in some places can be quite an experience, especially the huts on Koh pha ngan. You do need to take you own towels and a bit of advice, take plenty of tissues and wet wipes, while your travelling the toilets in thailand and malaysia are not the best. Eat plenty of thai food cos it gorgeous, my fav was pad thai! Everything in thailand is very cheap, however, as you travel through malaysia and into singapore things do get more expensive so if you can try to get you bargins in thailand. The overnight train is great, its very clean and quiet, you should have no problems sleeping.
hope this helps, have a great trip.
Lisa xx
p.s. make sure that you go to the night safari in singapore!
Re: bangkok - singapore
Hi - thanks so much for all the advice so far. I am finding it really useful.
Tracey - on your advice I am going to check out a thai food restaurant in the uk before heading off now. What exactly is pad thai, have heard it mentioned before but don't know what it is.
Lisa - looking forward to the overnight train now. What kind of bargains should i be looking for in Thailand? When you say Malaysia is more expensive than Thailand how much of a daily budget should I have in Thailand and how much in Malaysia?
Also can you recommend the must do things in each stop on the tour?
Thanks Lynne xx
Re: bangkok - singapore
Pad Thai is rice noodles, fried with bean sprouts, peanuts, shrimp, garlic, chives, chili peppers, etc..It is delicious...That is one of the dishes I learned to cook in the Thai Cooking Class..
And the night Safari in Singapore is definately great...So is the Jurong Bird park if you are into birds...Have a great time, I hope to go back next year!!

If anyone has tips for finding silk shirts (requested by my mum) or the best (cheap)sarong trousers in Bangkok please let me know as I plan on a trip to the markets on day one to stock up on summer wear!!

Re: bangkok - singapore
Hi!
you can find the "sarong" pants easily in "Kao San" road or "Jatujak weekend market"(The prize will be 1.5-2 EURO)
for silk shirt you can go to "Jim Thomson "shop which is a high-end, or in "queen Sirikit's SUPPORT foundation" or "Mae Fah Luang foundation" you will find something more traditional. for the plain Thai silk ,it will be 10-20 EURO/metre
don't worry , you will find information everywhere so that you can explored things by yourself.
the street food in Bangkok, you will spend 0.5-1 EURO for a meal. eating in restaurant will be more expensive. for a place to stay ,the cheapest will be around 5-10 EURO ,for a 3-stars hotels, you will spend 50 EURO/night.
hope you guys have fun here!

Re: bangkok - singapore
Hi,
Also try the Pak Boong! It is a vegetable dish made of Morning Glory (some plant) and thrown into a wok with soybeans, chillies and lots of other stuff (nice with crispy pork mixed in!) When it hits the hot oil it explodes into a ball of flame and is very exciting to watch, the taste is amazing!!!!!!
There is a restaurant really close to the hotel you use in Bangkok on the corner and its run by Mama, the food is amazing!!!!
Enjoy
