Hi,
I'm currently in the process of booking the Bangkok to Singapore Tour starting 1st January 2004. Is there anyone else looking to book or have already booked this fantastic adventure.
I've done the typical package tour thing and thought it was time for a real adventure.
Mail me if you are going:- davidlong59@blueyonder.co.uk

Re: Bangkok to Singapore
My friend and I are going on that tour. We will be flying to Bangkok on the first and staying two extra nights in Singapore. however, we will be checking into a different hotel for the last two nights. My Singapore friends told me that area of Singapore is not too great at night
Sara
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
Hi Sara,
STA Travel hold me that the last hotel we stay in is quite good, although its only costing me an extra
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
My friend and I are both 20. We're flying in from the U.S. We will be spending several days in Hong Kong before flying to Bangkok on the first. I have some friends in Singapore who have recommended that we stay at Hotel 81. It's about 35U.S. for a double so that should be about $20 in pounds give or take some depending on exchange rates.
I've been to Thailand, China and Hong Kong before so I'm quite familiar w/Asian culture. It should be a great trip. Good to hear that there are already 6 people booked- my airfare is non-refundable *laughs*
When will you be in Bangkok? My friend and I will be there around 11AM or rather our plane will land then.
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
I'm flying from Heathrow (London) via Singapore at 11:00, and according to the good old itinerary should be landing in Bangkok several hours later at 10:10 bangkok time. So we'll probably arrive around the same time.
I'm still trying to work out when I'll see New years, I expect i'll probably see it multiple times in the plane...
I haven't ever been to Asia before and really am looking forward to it, some of my friends have been before and say its fantastic.
I haven't ever done an adventure find of holiday before, I'm looking to take a 65LF rucksack, can you recommand one? I don't think the typcial package holiday suitcase will be any good for lugging around.
Are you flying back to the U.S after the trip.
Dave :-)

Re: Bangkok to Singapore
Sorry, I didn't mention which date I was flying out on. I'll be flying out on the 31st december 2003 and landing 1st January 2004.
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
I'm studying abroad in Hong Kong, so no I won't be going back to U.S. right away. I don't think we need to lug our stuff around all the time, so a regular suitcase (small) might be ok- ask imaginative traveller....When I went to Thailand, it was part of a YMCA student trip and they supplied the traveller's pack- no clue what brand or type it was 'cept that it was really heavy![[Smile]](smile.gif)
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
Hi Sara
Thanks for your post.
We would recommend that you bring a rucksack for this trip. As you'll be doing quite a lot of travelling on public buses, these are generally easier to carry and store than a rigid suitcase.
I hope that this information helps.
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
Thanks, Hong Kong sounds an excellent place to study.
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
Jim, I know you suggest bring a travellers pack, but I'm a quite short/small person and I just can't handle lugging those heavy packs around on my back. I will be bringing my suitcase that has wheels. We will only be travelling on trains and such I thought, right? Will this suffice?

Re: Bangkok to Singapore
Hi Catherine
Thanks for your post.
At the end of the day, it's really up to you what you take as luggage. I do tend to suggest rucksacks, as most people find these easier to carry, especially over longer distances. However, if you find a suitcase easier than a rucksack, then there's no reason as to why you shouldn't take one. You should make sure that you're able to carry it if necessary, as there will be circumstances (ie. when going up and down steps) when you won't be able to wheel it along.
You'll be travelling on trains, ferries and buses on the Bangkok to Singapore trip.
I hope that this helps.
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
Hi,
Does anyone know if Imaginative Traveller have any special discount arrangements with any of the dive centres in Thailand.
I'd like to possibly do a try dive it time allows.
David
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
Hi David
Thanks for your post.
We don't have any discount arrangements with dive centres, but our tour leaders will be able to point you towards the best dive shops that you have access to while on tour.
I hope that this helps.
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
Currency,
I'm currently in the process of planning my holiday travellers cheques etc.
Is it recommended to take a small amount of currency for each country. What is the best amount. I don't want to take too much or too little.
Can you help
David
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
Hi David
Thanks for your post.
It's really up to you how you carry your money - most people find it a good idea to take a mixture of traveller's cheques and cash. US dollars are generally the best currency to take with you, as they're easily exchangeable. Your tour leader will be able to offer advice about the best places to change money. You should budget for around US$25 for entrance fees (maybe more if you really want to cram the sites in) and about US$12 per day for meals, as these aren't included.
Beyond this, it's up to you. Some people like to buy a lot of souvenirs, and so if this is you, you should make extra allowances for this.
I hope that this helps.
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
HI, I did this trip starting January 2 2003. It was great. I know the itinerary is the same. I'm trying to get in contact with the tour leader I had (Christy Houston) as am going back for xmas and new year on dec 18 this year.
There were only 5 of us, plus Christy, when I went. That was 2 couples, and me! Nice! One couple was Dutch and spoke broken English. They were in their 40s and kept to themselves. The other 2 girls were great, but did their own thing a lot of the time. I had no problem like this when I went trucking in Africa in 2001 as there were so many of us!
Anyway, all the places you stay are great. The area in Singapore is great, I thought. Nice and central and the reps are really helpful with what to do. I'd do the Raffles hotel and have a Singapore SLing, and the shops on Orchard Road are exciting and not all are stupid prices. The Little India Guest House is great and I would go back there. When I was there, it was their festival where they stick things through their skin and walk 2 miles round the city. Very exciting, if a bit gross!
Don't be tempted by the cheap DVD and CD prices in Bangkok - wait till KL where you can get them for 80p ish. NOt all are great quality, but most are. I got heaps and only a couple didn't work. A good idea is to take an empty postable CD carrier, and put them all in there - less bulky, and safer for them.
Lots of great shops if that's what you like. The beaches at Krabi are great - I'll be in Krabi from about the 3rd January so might see you there! Let me know who your rep is too! Take the boat trip to Ko Phi Phi and Bamboo Island - heaven!!
I could go on forever! Only came on to check out what people are on here!
You'll have a wicked time.

You'll have a wicked time. [/b][/quote]Hi Sara,
Sounds like you had a fantastic time, I'll be in Krabi 3rd to 6th January. Its my 23rd Birthday 6th January. What a celebration thats going to be...
Did you take a sleeping bag, when you went on the trip earlier this year, is it a good idea or not nessercery.
Do you know of anybody who is flying from London Heathrow 31st December 2003?. I think the flight is scheduled to leave at 11am.
What other bargains should I look out for whilst i'm out there.
Dave :-) (counting the days)
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
Hi Sara
It me again, I forgot to ask you how much your overall spending budjet was at the end of the trip.
Where are you from anyway?
Dave
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
HI Dave
To be honest, loads of bargains are around! I bought some lovely jewellery in Krabi, which I wear every day. I bought great clothes in Bangkok, KL and Singapore. Singpore is the most expensive of the lot. Things like Batiks are nice, but don't look wuite so nice when you get them home and they're all crumpled!
I carried a sleeping bag with me the whole way, though it's only tiny. I didn't use it once. It's so hot, it'd be silly. A liner is useful, or a large sarong. A light blanketty thing anyway, is very useful - doubles as bag and a towel too!
I took with me
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
Hi,
I'm from Bristol, I was thinking about taking my sleeping bag, but its designed for this country so I don't think i'll bother. I'm thinking about buying one of those travel towels - it would probably double up as a blankett if I needed it.
I'll keep an eye out for you in Krabi, did you do any diving whilst on the trip. I did a little BSAC diving training a few months back Or any other sports
David :-)
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
Hello,
Anyone else booked the Bangkok to Singapore trek starting 1st Jan 2004?
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
Hi again Dave
Be careful with those travel towels. I bought 1 when I went to Africa. Seemed good idea, but barely covered my bum. Yes, I have a big bum, but it still didn't hide my modesty! I'd say a sleeping bag liner or a large sarong. That's what I'm taking this time I go.
I didn't do any diving. I hate sea swimming... however, when we did the boat trip to the Beach, we first stopped at another island. I decided I had to conquer my fears and go snorkelling. I didn't wear a BA, and the rip was terrible. I am a very weak swimmer and nearly died! But when we got the the Beach, the sea was still and I went fro it straight off, and you couldn't get me out of the water for love nor money! So, I'm reborn, but not quite to diving level! Can't wait to go snorkelling again in that water though!
Have fun!
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
Hi Sara,
I was thinking about getting the Trek XL towel, its about the same size as a beach towel. Should cover all me, and possibly do for a beach towel thing too...
I can't wait to get into that warm water, and get physical, maybe see a little sea life
David
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
Neither can I! So excited to be going back. Pressie from the boyfriend, so I get to show him around! Quite different, though, organising it all from scratch, but fun! Nice to know vaguely what I'm doing.
I'm sure the towel will be fine. I went for the cheapest, which equated to the smallest I think! When I went on the B-S trip earlier this year, I actually tok a very thinning regular towel, as was fed up with a cold, damp piece of cloth. But doesn't realy matter. it's so hot you quickly dry off any way.
I'm so envious you get to go to Malaysia, as I absolutely adored KL, Penang, Cameron HIghlands etc.. and loved Singpore.
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
What a fantastic Pressie, I think i'll probably go back after visiting it. I'm still counting down the says.
Did you travel alone when you did the B-S trip.
I'm going to buy a Trek Giant Towel
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
HI Dave
We are leaving 19 Dec, and coming home on the 9th. Couple days in Bangkok - lots of people hate it, and it's certainly no holiday centre, but I loved BKK and can't wait to go back. UP to Kanchanaburi for a night, and then flying (stylish!) down to Phuket, then Phi phi, then Krabi and Raley.
We both needed to excape family xmas, and he had the money at the time, so off we go! It's me, one opther girl and 6 lads! Guess what they're going for! Which is why we're spending our time with the other couple and leaving the lads to it!
I did go by myself, in fact, this is my first holiday with anyone other than just myself, in over 2 years. Scary! They say it's the make or break of a relationship!
Are you going alone too?
Re: Bangkok to Singapore
