I did the tour Beyond the ho chi minh trail in October and found U S dollars widely accepted as currency as well as dong, which can only be bought once in Vietnam. Local people such as small scale traders or hawkers prefer dong but shops, hotels even market traders like dollars. It's best if you have small notes like $1 and $5 s. Enjoy your trip. I'm thinking of returning as I enjoyed it so much. If you can stay longer take a 2 day excursion to the Mekong delta from Saigon.
