Legends of Komodo

My wife and I are considering the Legends of Komodo trip in July.

I have read the information, but think we are borderline in terms of conditioning to do it. We are roughly 60 and not in great shape, but we get by. We went on the Jewels of Egypt trip in 2007, but the most strenuous thing on it was the optional Mt. Sinai climb, which we did not do.

How strenuous is this tour?

And one question: I read that a sleeping bag is required. Is that for the night on the boat? If not, when?

Hello wfgray

I do apologise for the short delay in answering your question however have been looking into this for you and am actually still waiting for a reply with regards to the sleeping bag question.

The hike on day 7 is optional. If you decide to do it, you would leave at 09.00 by car/bus and arrive half an hour later at the starting point. Any person that has an average level of physical condition would be able to follow this. There’s not all that much walking involved, as you will walk from village to Village and they are all within a short distance from each other. You'd arrive back at Bajawa around 11.30.

The hikes day 10 and 11 are harder as it is around 2 and a half to 3 hours walking in hot tropical temperatures. Any person that has a good level of physical condition can follow this trek though.

The day 10 and 11 hikes are included in the tour price, however you could opt out if you wanted. If you decide not to join the walk you can stay on the boat.

Regards
Kelly

Thanks

I appreciate your answer. I was wondering more about day 7. Maybe, if we do go, doing that one would give us a clue about 10-11. It would be hard to go to Komodo and not at least try to see the dragons. But I don't guess you can just turn around and go back once you've started.

I am still curious about the sleeping bag question--I am wondering if you could do without one. On a boat, I think you could, unless mosquitoes are a problem. I would rather not have to worry about a sleeping bag for one night.

Sleeping bag question

Hi wfgray,

I've now found out that you could in fact get away without a sleeping bag on this tour, and we'd just recommend a sleeping sheet as an optional item.

Temperatures can be cooler at sea level but blankets are provided by the hotels in that case.

I have updated the trip dossier.

Regards
Kelly

Legends of Komodo

Sleep sheets are fine and the boat does carry blankets. One thing everyone should note is that you should if you can bring your own snorkelling gear. when I first researched the trip I managed to find some but when trying to tie down a local operator who would provide them found it extremely difficult.

Great trip good luck!!
