Re: Thailand Wilderness Advenutre 9/11
Hi,
We went beginning of this month and I didnt need the sleeping back I took - but it's useful a layer underneith you as some of the sleeping acommadation is hard on the back.
One thing about milaria (how ever it's spelt) tablets - you don't need them. Just get the usual set of shots but don't bother with milaria.
Also I found I was better off with a visa card than travellers cheuques - just as long as you've got one of those money belts you can hide out of view.
On the hill tribe bit you're going to need a back pack that'll last you a couple of days so don't do like I did and get a really small one! This is probably one of the times you'll need a sleeping bag but I'd advice against taking one as it's also the toughest bit of the trip!
Other stuff whilst I'm typing. Beware Tuk Tuk drivers in Bangkok and also people outside of temples etc who say they work there - they don't. They will attempt to get you to suit shops, carpet shops and the like. You'll spot them when they ask where you come from and how long you have been in Bangkok. When they ask you where you going and you say 'The grand palace' they will nearly always say 'it's shut' - or most other places - it will not be shut, they are just trying to get you to visit a suit shop. Metered Taxis, River Taxis (not long tails but the public boats where you hop on and off) and the mono rail thing are the best way to get around - as funky as the Tuk Tuks may be. This does not apply to chang mai where they take you where you want to go!
I have loads of photos from my trip but I don't want to spoil the excitement too much. Oh and don't worry about not packing enough clothes - if you in bangkok at the weekend go to the market at the end of the mono rail (forgot what it's called) and fill up you suitcase! Haggling is part of the fun, even if sometimes it's over 20p! There is a tourist price and local price to everything it seams!
