Re: Istanbul
Hello Alan,
Thanks for your post.
I went to Istanbul in September last year and definitely recommend a few days exploring. If you have a guidebook and map you will find Istanbul is a really easy city to walk around as most of the street names are signposted and easy enough to read.
Things I would recommend to see are:
- Blue Mosque
- Aya Sofya (closed Mondays)
- Suleymaniye Mosque
- Topkapi Palace & Treasury (and Harems if you have the time)
- Basilica Cistern - very eerie and interesting
- Grand Bazaar
- Egyptian Market
There are loads of other things you could do, too. There are museums, cafes, and you can take some time to walk over the Galata Bridge for great views of both sides of the city.
If you are on the Wild Turkey Adventure your meeting point hotel is currently the Albion Hotel (subject to change) which is about 2 minutes' walk from the Blue Mosque, to give you some idea of location.
I hope this helps and that you have a great time in Istanbul and on the tour!
Re: Istanbul
I did Wild Turkey last Summer. All of the things that Kelly lists are well worth exploring. The Grand Bazaar alone could take days to fully explore - especially if you forget which gate you went in... This trip covers so many things that it's hard to pick out one highlight. Watch out for the Raki unless you want a fearsome hangover. On the way up to Gallipoli we 'pursuaded' our guide to divert via Troy - worth considering as you pass only 15km away. I'm sure that you will have a fantastic trip.
