I'm booking the "Turkey Land and Sea" tour for August, and was hoping to hear back from someone who's been on one of the gulets. I was on one of the Egypt tours last year and spent three blissful days on "Amy" cruising down the Nile. Now I realize the Nile is a river, and in Turkey we're going to be on the ocean, but I was wondering if there's any comparison for the "motion" that we'll be experiencing. I'm a little worried about feeling nautious.

Looking forward to hearing back from someone!

Re: Motion of the Ocean

Hi Lisa,

I have to admit, I haven't been on this tour or even a 'Gulet' for that matter so I can't offer you my experiences unfortunately.

I have sailed smaller boats (while on holiday) in the Mediterranean and found it to be a very pleasurable experience.

You are not constantly on the move in the Gulet as cruising times are made short by stopping in secluded bays where you can swim or try your hand at windsurfing (there is a windsurfer on board), and also in small harbours.

There is ample opportunity to go ashore to explore ruins and sample the restaurants of the lovely coastal towns.

The cruise itinerary will take you along the most attractive section of the Turquoise coast. As you will be close to the coast throughout the cruise, you shouldn't expect any rough sea. However, as you are on the sea which is unlikely to be as smooth as the Nile, you should expect some motion, so if you do suffer from any type of motion sickness, then it might be a good idea to have a magical remedy made up by your doctor!

If the weather does play up a little in such a way that the cruise has to be postponed, then the itinerary may be changed to reflect this. So you wont be going out in rough weather!

Again, as I can't offer my experiences of this cruise I will check with our man in Turkey who will know all there is to know about it, and see what he has to say about the 'Motion on the Ocean'

I'll come back to you as soon as I know anything else!

Cheers

Re: Motion of the Ocean

Hi again Lisa!

I have just heard back from 'Yavuz' our Destinations Manager in Turkey who says,
there is one section of the cruise where the sea can sometimes become rough, but this is covered 'early' in the morning to avoid the rough sea.

Generally this specific area (Between Kalkan and Gemile), can become a little rougher throughout the day (hence the early start!).

Yavuz also reiterates what I mentioned with regards to motion/sea sickness, in that you may be wise to bring some sickness pills along if you are a sufferer?

Best regards

Re: Motion of the Ocean

Hi Lisa,

I've been on a Gulet cruise several years ago, and I found it to be the highlight of the whole tour through Turkey. It's absolutely brilliant!

About the motion: most of the time you will be cruising in between islands, where the waters that you cruise through are more or less secluded. So there shouldn't be too much waves there. There is however one part (as Ru has already mentioned, leaving Kalkan) where there are no islands, and where you will be cruising along the coast. Depending on the wind, the sea can get a bit rough there, but if you stay on deck at all times and keep your eyes on the coast, you shouldn't be plagued with motion sickness (at least that worked for me). The people who went below decks then had to come up again rapidly! This was the only stretch where people got seasick.

Anyway, this part of the cruise only takes about 2-3 hours. If you're very prone to motion sickness, get some pills from a doctor. Don't miss out on a Gulet cruise because of this, I'll assure you it's more fun and more relaxing than on Amy!

Have fun!

Robert.
