Re: Turkey for sure?
I can tell you that the "Best of East and West" tour of Turkey was absolutely fantastic! I was a little hesitant because of the distance and I am not exactly a spring chicken but I had a great time! I was traveling with a male friend and we enjoyed every minute. I think the highlight was the homestay in Barhal Valley. Mehmet and his family were delightful and their home is wonderful. The van rides are long but the scenery and ruins are spectacular. I do suggest you buy a small cushion in Ankara and use that in the van when traveling. The roads are bumpy and it can double as a pillow. Oh, and start practicing your squats now! Those squaty potties are the only toilets when you are on the road. The hotels are very clean even though they are 1-2 star they were safe and adequate. The dossier is right when it says that Kars is the "armpit" of Anatolia but it has it own interesting aspects. The street walkers will keep you awake at night if your room faces the alley! I can say we loved it all. Take a look at some of our pictures at www.teachmath.net. Click on photo albums and then scroll down to Turkey 2004. I know you will have a great trip. We did. Oh, and I forgot to mention. The Turkish hotels have no face cloths. If you like to use a face cloth take some cheap ones with you and cut them in half. Then you can leave them behind as you go. Also, you will need a towel for when you drive along the Aegean. The driver will stop now and then and you can swim. Bonnie in California
