Scattered over an area of 200 square kilometres, the Angkor complex of temples is without doubt one of the most astounding archaeological sites in the world. Founded in the 9th Century AD, Angkor became the country’s capital and by the 13th Century, Angkor was one of the largest cities in the world. It served as the royal centre from which a dynasty of Khmer kings ruled one of the largest, most prosperous and sophisticated kingdoms in the history of South East Asia. At the height of their power their territory extended from the tip of the Indochina peninsula, northward to Yunnan and from Vietnam, westward to the Bay of Bengal.
All our adventure holidays to Cambodia include an informative day-long tour of Angkor visiting, amongst others, the South Gate of Angkor Thom (famous for its series of colossal human faces carved in stone), the impressive Bayon Temple and, of course, the fabulous Angkor Wat, the largest and most complete structure. It is the only temple with its entrance facing the west, the reason being that it was constructed as a funerary temple for King Suryavarman II and a westerly countenance was seen to represent a sunset. We also visit Ta Prohm Temple, an incredible sight, with large trees embedding themselves in the stone foundations giving the impression of man’s creation being reclaimed by the powerful forces of nature.
Angkor Wat specifically is a temple situated in the Angkor temple complex near Siem Reap, Cambodia
Only Egypt’s Nile Valley can compare to the vast array of ancient monuments found here
‘Angkor’ derives from the Sanskrit word “nagara”, meaning city or capital
From Angkor, kings ruled over a territory that extended from China to Vietnam and the Bay of Bengal
The first religion of the Angkor Wat temple was Hindu – it is now Buddhism
Like many ancient sites, Angkor was lost to the jungle until re-discovery by a western explorer
