Since 1931, this figure has been one of the most famous symbols of Rio de Janeiro. It stands 40 metres tall atop the granite hunchback mountain of Corcovado and is one of the tallest statues in the world. Weighing 700 tons, the span from fingertip to fingertip is 28m. It was designed by French sculptor, Paul Landowski, to show that Christ loves all.
A cogwheel train leaves every 30 minutes on a 17-minute ride that is almost straight up through lush Atlantic rainforest. At the top be prepared to climb a number of stairs to get to the base of the statue where you will find a small chapel – and some of the city’s best views. The left arm points to Rio de Janeiro’s north zone and the right to the south zone.
