Imaginative Traveller launch new range of cycling trips

Make your hobby your holiday in 2014

With only two months to go before the world’s greatest bike race, the Tour de France, departs from Yorkshire, and still riding high on Olympic and previous TDF success, the sport of cycling is definitely having a moment.

The small group adventure specialist, who has been operating for over 23 years, have 9 cycling trips in North and Latin America, South Africa, Europe,  Africa, South East Asia and India. Most of the trips take circular routes. The trips are between 8 and 14 days in length and cost between £999 and £2,199 per person.

“Making your hobby a holiday is definitely an emerging trend in the small group adventures market,” says Lorna Archibald, Sales and Marketing Manager for Imaginative Traveller. 

“Although many of our trips have had a cycling or other active component like trekking or rafting, this is the first time we’ve offered exclusive cycling adventures,” she says. “However, there are still plenty of opportunities to get out of the saddle to visit vineyards, trek up mountains or explore archaeological sites during these adventures”.

The new trips are:

Cycling the Vineyards of California , a 13 day adventure between San Francisco and LA via Napa Valley.  The ultimate trip for active foodies – this amazing adventure takes you through the vineyards of California, whilst burning off all the calories consumed.  Highlights include: Napa Valley, join the Silverado Trail, a scenic route passing over 40 wineries, Coastal Highway, following the Russian River via the magnificent Armstrong Redwood State Natural Reserve, crossing the Golden Gate bridge by bike, 17 Mile Drive / Big Sur, Santa Maria – Santa Barbara; the ‘American Riviera’, Santa Monica – Los Angeles.  The trip costs from £2199 per person.  Departs 11th May, 15th June, 7th September, 12th October.

Cycling the Cape and Winelands (South Africa), a 12 day cycling odyssey on a unique circular route taking in many of the fantastic sights that the Cape Peninsula has to offer. In addition to Table Mountain and the chance to sample the produce of the world famous wine estates of Stellenbosch, the wild coastline and rugged interior provide some classic riding on peaceful roads with very little traffic. The stunning scenery, a rich cultural history, unique flora, and some unusual wildlife encounters in the form of penguins, plains game, whales (in season) and baboons, make this a fantastic destination to discover by bicycle.  The trip costs from £1,499 per person. First 2014 departure 27th July.

Cycling in Sardinia A fully supported 8 day adventure between San Salvatore and Pula, on Sardinia’s south western coast. Enjoy varied scenery of lush wetlands, white beaches, towering cliffs and ancient ruins, island hop by ferry, visiting picturesque fishing villages, over-nighting in cosy farmhouses. The trip costs from £1,029 per person. There are 9 departures between 10th May and 25th October.

Cycling in Mexico  A circular 10 day trip from Cancun to Cancun via Merida, Chichen Itza and Tulum. Mexico is home to idyllic beaches, lively music, astonishing archaeology, exciting food and friendly people, making it the perfect destination for a fantastic cycling holiday. Following Yucatan’s backroads, we cycle through colourful villages, explore magnificent Mayan pyramids and temples, and swim in the transparent waters of enormous canyons. We end the trip on the idyllic Riviera May, where there is the opportunity to snorkel on the world’s longest coral reef, or simply relax on a palm-filled Caribbean beach: the perfect way to unwind after a week cycling! A 10 day trip costs from £1,329 per person.  Regular departures through 2014.

Cuban Cycle Ride £999 for an 8 day circular trip ex Havana, and one of the most relaxed, easy-going cycle rides Imaginative Traveller offers. Following country roads we cycle around the lush Bay of Pigs, site of the failed US 1961 invasion attempt, and swim in the inviting waters of the Caribbean Sea. We spend time in the World Heritage Sites of Cienfuegos and Trinidad – colourful, colonial refuges far removed from the modern world. Cycling through the tropical forest of Topes de Collantes National Park to the stunning lake at Hanabanilla reveals the natural splendour of this island. We end the trip learning about Cuba’s revolutionary history, visiting Che Guevara’s Mausoleum before returning to Castro’s capital – enigmatic, charming Havana. 

Cycling the backroads of China This exciting new 13 day cycling trip explores the very best of rural South-West China. Taking in some of the most famous images of China, including the giant pandas of Sichuan and the Karst scenery of Yangshuo, travellers’ will also embark on a ride through some of best kept secrets of the region. Starting in Chengdu you will journey to Guiyang where you will begin cycling. The route takes you through breathtaking scenery, terraced rice fields and to ancient villages, alongside rivers and streams, lined with bamboo. The trip will end in Yangshuo among the towering, limestone mountains that appear to have bubbled out of the ground and set in dramatic shapes and sizes as far as the eye can see. The trip costs from £1,999 per person and departs 13th October.

Cycling Rajasthan  One of the best value-for-money cycling trips, this 16 day adventure takes a circular route around Rajasthan,  from green rolling hills to barren deserts. The whole state is dotted with dramatic fortresses, reminders of the Rajputs and their warrior past, while away from the desert the countryside is a patchwork of villages and small towns where we can see the timelessness of rural India. Cycling is the perfect way to explore, offering a fascinating insight into the traditional way of life here. From Jodhpur our journey takes us first to the beautiful lakeside city of Udaipur, and on to the holy town of Pushkar. Leaving the desert scenery behind we ride to Jaipur, a town overlooked by the splendid hilltop Amber Palace. We also visit Sariska National Park, beautifully located and home to an abundance of wildlife.A fitting way to finish the trip is at the magnificent Taj Mahal, one of the new seven wonders of the world. The trip costs from £1,429 per person, first departure 27th September 2014.

Cycle Namibia Again, a circular route ex Windhoek, this 13 day trip is a wonderful adventure through wide open spaces and massive, endless skies. Sand dunes gradually turn into granite hills, whilst rocky outcrops with ancient paintings give way to vast plains where elephants, giraffes and lions roam. Travelling through the wilderness from behind the handlebar is, undoubtedly, one of the best ways of experiencing the varied landscape of this desert nation. Discover the country’s highlights on two wheels and go on game drives in one of southern Africa’s best game reserves, Etosha National Park. Combining the sense of freedom of exploring by bike with the sense of adventure of an overland truck, to cover large distances, this trip mixes Namibia’s breathtaking scenery with its fantastic game viewing opportunities. Costs from £1,749 per person, four departures in 2014 from 15th June.

Cycling Vietnam, a 14 day adventure hugging the coastline between Halong Bay and Ho Chi Minh City. Highlights include Cu Chi Tunnels, the hill station of Dalat, Nha Trang, Hoi An, cycle over the Hai Van Pass, Hue, guided tour of the Forbidden Purple City and cruise the Perfume River to the Nguyen emperor tombs, overnight on Reunification Express for overnight journey to Haoi, Halong Bay. Departs up to four times a month. The trip costs from £1,129 per person, flights ex London approx £740 per person.
