If beaches are an important factor when choosing a summer holiday destination, then Rhodes could be a safe bet. The Greek destination has more Blue Flag awards than any other islands and claims to have the cleanest beaches in the European Union, according to a report from eTravel.com. Some 33 beaches were awarded Blue Flags, which are an internationally-recognised status for environmental standards, cleanliness, amenities and safety.
Syria, Japan and Finland have been named as three of the top ten destinations for imaginative travellers keen to escape the hoards of fellow Brits on a break this summer. According to research carried out by flight comparison site Skyscanner, the number of Brits that visit Spain each year exceeds 16 million people. If laying a beach towel down next to sunburned compatriots is not the desired holiday ideal, then a trip to the Middle Eastern destination of Syria - which offers a Mediterranean shoreline - could be a sensible option.
Imaginative travellers looking for a cheaper destination in the sun this year may wish to consider a trip to Greece, a foreign currency provider has suggested. "Greece has been and remains at large so much cheaper than the equivalent destinations elsewhere in the sun," said Theo Papathanasiou, Greek desk manager at World First. He went on to say that there are "many unique historical sites and ambience of antiquity and ancient times" that attract people to the destination in the summer months.
Finland has been described as a "bright and airy wonderland" in the summertime to holidaymakers considering taking a trip to the nation this season. Chris Leadbeater took a trip to Helsinki for the city's midsummer celebrations and wrote about his Finnish adventures in the Daily Mail, advocating the height of summer as a great time to visit for the imaginative traveller. "The abundance of natural light makes for a festival atmosphere, where the bars stay open late and there is a feel-good vibe among the residents," he writes.
If sun, secret beaches and wonderful scenery are your thing then heading to Romania, Albania or Slovenia this summer might be a good idea. According to flight comparison company Skyscanner, holidaymakers can get more for less by heading to beach resorts in these undiscovered locations. Romania, the website advises, is more famous for being the birthplace of Count Dracula than it is for sandy beaches, but it is these stretches of golden shorelines that will greet the imaginative traveller this summer. "All for a lot less dosh than in the Med[iterannean]," says Skyscanner.
The arrival of the minibus in Costa Rica "is opening up the country for holidaymakers" according to a travel writer. Will Pavia, writing for the Times, said that a new network of minibuses that has started running in the country this year will take imaginative travellers across the country in "a matter of hours". "You are picked up early and delivered to a new world, a new hotel and a new frog with most of the day left to explore," he explained. On his ten-day trip, Mr Pavia visited the town of La Fortuna, located at the base of the Arenal Volcano.
Imaginative travellers are not doing all they can to make sure their holiday money is stretched to its full potential, a currency provider has reported. Holidaymakers are "really missing a trick" when it comes to exchanging their money, said a spokesperson for Tesco Travel Money. "Over a third of holidaymakers still head to their high street bank or travel agent and one in five use cash points abroad for the majority of their holiday spending money," the company explained.
A holiday to South Africa has been named as one of the top ten travel destinations to keep the children entertained on a family adventure holiday, according to a flight comparison site. "I can't think of a more exciting holiday for young kids than coming face to face with all those animals which they have only seen in books or on the telly," said the article by Skyscanner. According to the company, there are many safari lodges in South Africa that are family-friendly, for those concerned about taking their children to the destination.
The period from now until October is one of the best times to take a trip to Peru, according to the country's tourist board. With some 3,000 festivals celebrated in the South American country each year, "some of the most flamboyant and diverse festivals that Peru has to offer" take place over the next four months. "Now is definitely the time to grab a last minute trip [to Peru]", it added. For travellers looking for an adventure-bound holiday, Ancash may be the destination for them.
