The internet is providing the over-55 age group with the opportunity to benefit from last-minute travel.
Carmel Dennis, project manager at New Media Trend Watch, said: "This generation are familiar with the internet from their workplaces and also may have the freedom to book more last-minute short breaks online."
Imaginative travellers who fit into this demographic are more likely to be free from certain constraints when booking travel such as school holidays.
Ms Dennis went on to say that the over-55s are as comfortable in using the internet as their younger counterparts but they are beginning to dominate the online travel booking market.
Another trend that emerged from a study by IVRA Holding was that women are the dominant sex when it comes to booking a holiday tour online.
In fact, more than 50 per cent of travel bookings made over the internet in 2009 are predicted to be carried out by females in 2009.
Online bookings by over-55s are expected to account for 21.5 per cent of the whole market by 2011.
