Wine lovers looking to get off the beaten track may wish to consider exploring South Australia.
This is according to Wine Enthusiast magazine's Joe Czerwinski, who hailed the region this week for its varied wines and laid-back vineyards.
He explained that visitors to the Australian state should look beyond the big-name vineyards - such as Barossa and McLaren - and instead opt to discover smaller wineries.
Mr Czerwinski wrote that this type of winery "may prove to be the future of Australian wine, a more comfortable, personal approach with stronger ties to land and lifestyle".
He also highlighted South Australia as "the engine" that drives the nation's wine industry, identifying Langhorne Creek, the Clare Valley and Adelaide Hills as areas to discover.
Visitors to the Clare Valley will enjoy the year-round harvest season atmosphere of the vibrant rural community - and the rustic food and drink on offer will appeal to anyone who has spent the day exploring in the sun.
March and April are popular months to make a wine pilgrimage to the region - which also offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor pursuits such as cycling.
