One adventure bound journalist recently recounted his exploits on the Curzon Trail in the Garhwal Himalayas. Writing for the Telegraph, Henry Wismayer notes the benefits the region has to offer for adventure-bound travellers keen to escape the frenzied activity of more tourist-dominated destinations. "Silence is sacred in the Garhwal Himalayas," he writes of his time in the area. "This is Hinduism's spiritual heart," he adds, "journey's end for sun-blackened mendicants, home to various many-armed deities and birthplace of the Ganges."
Adventure trips could be set for a surge in popularity in 2010, according to predictions on the years ahead by Gap Adventures. The company recently revealed its top ten tips for travel over the next 20 years and stated that it expects people to increasingly embark on once-in-a-lifetime journeys to spectacular places they have always wanted to see. It said: "This can be anything from visiting that lifetime dream destination or climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to learning to cook in South America or even rehabilitating wild animals."
Imaginative travellers who are hoping to embark on an eco-friendly trip in the near future may be interested in a number of destinations suggested by the Guardian. According to the publication's Richard Hammond, there are plenty of great places to stay for the environmentally-conscious explorer, including the Sandele Eco-Retreat in Gambia. Mr Hammond wrote: "Sandele is the vision of two Brits who have built ten eco-friendly forest cabanas next to a three-mile sandy beach, as well as 20 guest rooms for a charity that runs environmental courses."
