Get close to leopards in Kenya

Monday, November 30, 2009

Kenya is a brilliant travel destination for those who want to get up close and personal with wildlife, including leopards.

Travel writer David Wickers, who is also the editor of 101holidays.co.uk, said that the most memorable experience of his travels in Kenya involved tracking one of the big spotted cats with a local bushman on a game sanctuary in the Rift Valley.

He told the Guardian that the pair spotted paw prints and droppings before happening upon a hollow of flattened grass - which was still warm from where the leopard had been resting.

"The cat was no doubt watching us from a few yards away, a most unnerving fact that brought home the essence of a safari more than any of the umpteen sightings I've experienced," Mr Wickers stated.

Kenya Advisor suggests that leopards can be spotted at a number of reserves and parks across the country. However, the best time to spot one of the cats may be between July and September, during the annual migration of wildebeest.
