Imaginative travellers who are hoping to embark on an eco-friendly trip in the near future may be interested in a number of destinations suggested by the Guardian.
According to the publication's Richard Hammond, there are plenty of great places to stay for the environmentally-conscious explorer, including the Sandele Eco-Retreat in Gambia.
Mr Hammond wrote: "Sandele is the vision of two Brits who have built ten eco-friendly forest cabanas next to a three-mile sandy beach, as well as 20 guest rooms for a charity that runs environmental courses."
He added that a water well is generated by renewable energy and its owners plan to give the land back to the village in 25 years time.
The resort won the Ethical travel award at the 2009 Guardian, Observer and guardian.co.uk Travel Awards.
Bulungula Lodge in South Africa came second, with Cnoc Suain rounding off the top three.
In addition, Mr Hammond suggested Chumbe Island Coral Park in Tanzania as an ideal destination for eco-friendly adventure travellers, as it offers people the chance to go snorkelling, while the facility harvests rainwater and makes use of solar energy.
