Imaginative explorers looking for a winter trip to get away from it all and avoid tourist-ridden destinations have been offered some advice by travel writer Annabelle Thorpe.
Writing in the Observer, she suggested travellers hoping to discover picturesque retreats try Sri Lanka's Aditya hotel in Galle, which sits a stone's throw away from beaches and "tranquil" rooms.
In addition, she encouraged checking out the Pacuare Lodge in Costa Rica, which boasts luxurious rooms amidst tropical waterfalls and canyons ideal for adventure-bound holidaymakers.
She went on to explain that Gambia could be the perfect place for nature lovers looking for winter sun, in particular the clifftop Ngala Lodge with nearby forests, beaches and fishing locations.
The calm suburb of Maadi in Egypt might be a good option for imaginative travellers, she added, which offers a break "from the madness of Cairo's streets".
Lonely Planet advises people visiting Egypt also head to Alexandria or the Pyramids of Giza.
