South Africa 'embracing ecotourism'

Thursday, February 11, 2010

Imaginative explorers who want to travel responsibly and reduce the detrimental impact they have on the environment might want to consider heading to South Africa.

According Jeremy Smith, author for Rough Guides, the country has really embraced ecotourism.

"South Africa is amazing for it," he said before going on to the explain that it runs a scheme called Fair Trade Tourism South Africa, which aims to promote sustainable tourism development.

"When they do it well they do amazing engagement there, you really connect with South Africa and meet with the communities," he added.

Furthermore, Mr Smith stated that Costa Rica and Laos are other "wonderfully beautiful" destinations that have made ecotourism a big priority.

And those worried about the cost of sustainable travelling were told that it does not necessarily have to be more expensive.

Rough Guides is a series of a travel books that were first launched by four friends in 1982.
