Imaginative explorers have been encouraged to sample the delights of India by heading off the beaten track and visiting Chandigarh.
The Department of Tourism of Chandigarh Administration recently revealed that the number of foreign travellers going to the region surged from 32,074 in 2008 to 37,967 last year.
It stated that it hopes to exceed these figures in 2010.
According to Sarina Singh, senior author for Lonely Planet India, the city's attractions, such as the Nek Chand Fantasy Rock Garden, have turned it into an extremely popular location for holidaymakers - particularly those with a love of architecture.
She added that the destination "fits the bill" for imaginative travellers who want to "jump off the tourist treadmill".
Furthermore, Ms Singh explained that the location's local cuisine is extremely affordable, which may interest foodies.
"When it comes to value for money on the culinary front Chandigarh shines, offering everything from cheap-as-chips roadside eateries to fancy multi-cuisine restaurants," she said.
