Imaginative explorers have a responsibility when it comes to reducing the environmental impact of their trips, the Tourism Sustainability Council (TSC) has suggested.
Wanderlust recently revealed that there are a number of iconic monuments and destinations that are in need of serious care.
These include Macchu Picchu in Peru, the Bay of Fires in Tasmania, Jordan's Wadi Rum and India's Jaisalmer.
According to the TSC's executive director Erika Harms, who is also senior advisor on Tourism at the United Nations Foundation, travellers are putting some the world's wonders at risk if there is no sufficient management plan at the destination.
However, "the traveller has in the first instance the ability to choose a destination that is well managed as well as a provider that is more sustainable", she said.
She gave a number of tips to those wanting to be more responsible when they head out on their trips, including getting advice from the World Heritage Alliance, being wary of the resources they are using and managing waste and energy better.
In addition, she said getting to know the local communities is a great idea.
