Syria, Japan and Finland have been named as three of the top ten destinations for imaginative travellers keen to escape the hoards of fellow Brits on a break this summer.
According to research carried out by flight comparison site Skyscanner, the number of Brits that visit Spain each year exceeds 16 million people.
If laying a beach towel down next to sunburned compatriots is not the desired holiday ideal, then a trip to the Middle Eastern destination of Syria - which offers a Mediterranean shoreline - could be a sensible option.
Travellers visiting Syria in August may wish to attend the Jazz Lives in Syria Festival, with six nights of Jazz performed in both Damascus and Aleppo.
Japan receives 221,000 British travellers each year and remains somewhat off the beaten track, the site noted. With a society that is distinctly "un-British" the imaginative explorer has plenty of culture to lose themselves in.
According to the tourist board in Finland, the country is "refreshingly different" and is a "paradise for campers, hikers and bikers" where people can escape all types of crowds, added the travel site.
