Imaginative travellers have been urged to head to the cluster of Japanese islands of Okinawa and immerse themselves in the destination's unique and appealing culture.
Writing for the Observer, Teresa Machan revealed that the location is "Japan's sub-tropical alter ego" due to its position in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and a combination of influences on language, music and way of life.
She stated that explorers hoping to embed themselves in Okinawa's community would be rewarded, as the archipelago's inhabitants are "a happy, welcoming if endearingly bonkers lot."
Furthermore, she explained that the destination is "progressive" and even something of a "hip outpost" away from the more conservative mainland Japan.
Those looking for an adventure holidays may also find it a perfect location for a trip, with imaginative travellers able to go snorkelling, kayaking and diving around the islands.
Okinawa is Japan's 47th prefecture and sits south-west of mainland Japan.
