Imaginative travellers looking to inject a bit of culture into their next adventure may wish to consider a holiday in Istanbul.
The Turkish capital city is set to become the European Capital of Culture in the new year and many monuments and historic sites are undergoing extensive restoration work as preparations get underway.
According to the Turkish Culture & Tourism Office, a number of arts and cultural events are scheduled to take place in Istanbul next year and the city will also open several new hotels, museums, galleries, clubs, restaurants and shopping centres.
Once they have had their fill of urban splendour, imaginative travellers may then wish to head to Antalya on the Turkish Riviera for some rest and relaxation or to Bodrum or Marmaris for miles of scenic coastline and warm weather.
Marmaris Info notes that while the town was only a small fishing village two decades ago, it has grown into a cosmopolitan visitor destination.
Holidaymakers may wish to take part in a scuba diving excursion or explore the ancient Roman city of Efes - thought to be the second-largest urban centre, after Rome, of the Roman Empire - during their stay.
