Three destinations for an authentic Italian holiday

Friday, July 03, 2009

Holidaymakers looking to take an authentic Italian break away from the hordes of tourists may wish to consider visiting the south of the country where there are many towns that are relatively undiscovered.

Conversano in Puglia is one of these destinations according to Long Travel, which is located in the boot's heel of the country.

The Osteria Giangirolamo close to the main square is a recommended dining destination and with no menu, imaginative travellers are advised to trust the chef's recommendations.

Martatea in Basilicata is also an undiscovered gem according to the company which has a "pretty harbour, a quaint, old centre, little squares, old churches and interesting shops".

Located on the edge of the Pollino National Park, the mountainous landscape reveals the area as "a region of real contrasts".

Noto in Sicily is a town with Unesco World Heritage status and is a less tourist-filled destination than other areas on the Italian island.

Sicily is also home to many vineyards and olive groves and there is plenty of countryside for imaginative explorers to get lost in.
