'Magic, beauty and music' in Serbia
Friday, May 29, 2009A trip to the "Serbian Woodstock" Guca Festival will leave you feeling that a brass band "will never sound the same again", a travel writer has said.
Describing the Baltic country in a piece for the Guardian, Garth Cartwright said: "Much beauty and magic is found here. And then there's the music."
Mr Cartwright noted that the music in Serbia was what had kept him returning since his first ever visit and the traditional styles "are richer than those of anywhere else in Europe".
Located in the centre of the country, Guca, the location for the festival and a small Serbian town, bears some resemblance to Switzerland, he stated.
The festival, which takes place in August, is free to attend and attracts some 300,000 people from all over the world to a place that has a resident population of 2,500.
According to Mr Cartwright, the festival is an exhilarating and wild experience where festivalgoers dance all day and where there is a sense of "bacchanalia".
The event's official website claims it is the largest trumpet event in the world and the tradition dates back to 1831 in the region.

Music is our universal language, no matter what kind of music it is. Rap, mellow, rock, country musics are all different but still understands by every individual. Part of being a rapper is not spelling anything correctly – just like the rapper Shyne. Shyne is big news, because he's being released from prison. For those who don't know who he is (and don't bother, he's been overrated since the get go), he isn't of a lot of note other than he was involved in a nightclub shooting (oh, another rapper opened fire in a nightclub and went to jail – this guy is SO original) that Sean Combs, or Puff Daddy, was involved in. He was sentenced to ten years in 2001, and is getting released early, and his lawyer didn't like that he was going to get probation – because we sure wouldn't want to take up too much of the violent convicted felon's time. You can find his music out there – and you won't want to waste any payday loans on his cd's or concert tickets.
