Imaginative travellers wishing to learn more about the past on a holiday in the eastern European destination of Slovenia may wish to spend some time in the fourth-largest city of Kranj.
Between the world wars, the city began constructing a series of tunnels and bunkers to shelter residents underground.
For a 3 (£2.59) entrance fee, imaginative explorers can now enter the tunnel network on a guided tour, some 70 years since the construction began.
Part of the tunnel system is a 1,300 metre-long bunker that was used on a regular basis by Slovenians during more intense periods of bombings during the Second World War.
This was especially common during the period of occupation in Slovenia from 1944 until the war ended the following year.
Only 20 kilometres away is the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana, which is hosting a summer festival until September 4th.
Some of the events at the festival include the ballet Pink Floyd and operatic performances from the Bolshoi Theatre.
