Try a trek in the El Yunque National Forest

Friday, January 23, 2009

Anyone looking for some adventure travel in 2009 could consider a trip to Puerto Rico in order to experience the El Yunque National Forest.

This is the suggestion of Darcy Henton of the Edmonton Journal, who said that she thoroughly enjoyed the trip, despite being slightly scared of bumping into large snakes or mongooses.

The travel writer said she saw the La Mina waterfall, which she described as "spectacular", as well as the Yokahu Tower, which offered views over the rainforest and out over the Caribbean.

The forest also contains a visitor centre, which offers displays of the animals and plants that live in the rainforest and guided trails if tourists want them.

Ms Henton said she would have liked her holiday to be longer in order to spend more time exploring El Yunque - but added that she was pleased not to have seen any snakes.

According to elyunque.com, the forest is designated a Biosphere Reserve as recommended by the United Nations.
