Across the sea from Italy, Albania is the perfect "utopian" destination for backpackers in 2009, a travel writer has said.
"With empty beaches and bargain prices, its Adriatic coast could be the ultimate traveller destination," wrote Matt Carroll for the Observer.
Mr Carroll compared the European destination to travelling in Thailand - with beach hut accommodation, beach bars and a turquoise sea - but without the long-haul flight and the price tag.
"Developers must be itching to get their hands on this place, but for now the backpackers have it to themselves," he added.
For the traveller in search of a little more civilisation than the beach, Mr Carroll recommends heading to Saranda on the Ionian coast - across the water from Corfu.
