Imaginative travellers who take gap years later in life are more likely to opt for sustainable trips.
This is according to founder of gapyear.com Tom Griffiths, who said that green issues and making a difference to the planet had become a popular travel trend for the older gap year taker.
He explained: "The places they go to, they want to make sure they are not contributing to the economies where the money gets filtered out to international companies."
Eco-tourism is something that is interesting to them as they are a lot more "discerning" than their younger counterparts, he continued.
The so-called older gapper also looks to spend a longer time abroad, which is why volunteer breaks are popular among this demographic, added Mr Griffiths.
According to the Year Out Group, teaching, community projects, health and child general care and land-based conservation projects are the most common forms of volunteering taken by UK imaginative travellers.
