An increasing number of gap year travellers who are heading on adventure holidays across the world are taking out backpacker insurance.
That is according to Direct Travel Insurance, which has published research showing there was a 40 per cent increase in sales of such cover for travel in Europe.
It would seem that imaginative travellers embarking on European tours are becoming savvier when it comes to insuring their belongings.
Jonathan Cooper, managing director at the insurance firm, said: "Our figures show that young travellers are becoming more aware of the risks they could be facing."
He added that buying travel cover is cheaper than replacing stolen or lost items, or shelling out on large medical bills.
Overall, backpacker insurance policy sales were up 25 per cent, according to the research.
As universities in the UK start new terms this month, many people who have chosen to take gap years before starting their studies will be setting off on fantastic adventures across the world.
