'Adventure family holidays to be found' in Syria

Wednesday, May 06, 2009

Syria is a great place to head to for a family adventure holiday, according to a travel journalist.

Writing for the Times Anne Spackman recommended taking children to the "souks, citadels and smiles" when they have become too grown-up for sandcastles.

"Our holidays have evolved from mainstream family fun to travels in places a little farther off the tourist track," she explained.

Ms Spackman said Syria had been her family's most unusual holiday destination to date but they were met with welcome and hospitality wherever they went.

Her family visited the remains of the Byzantine settlements in the north-west of the country which she said one day would become the "itinerary of the typical Syrian tourist" in perhaps ten years time, but for now they remain the territory of the more imaginative traveller.

Lonely Planet named the ruins of the Dead Cities as one of its top sights in the country and described them as unchartered, largely undocumented and free from tourists.
