Antarctica gives travellers the "urge to explore"

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

A trip to the Antarctic left one travel writer "overcome by the beauty of the landscape" as well as a newfound respect for the continent.

Paul Oswell, writing for the Daily Mail, said that as soon as land came into view on his Antarctic cruise, he felt an "immediate urge to explore".

Mr Oswell took a boat from Buenos Aires and "baby penguins curiously nudging [his] feet was an early expedition highlight", he said.

While exploring the land, Mr Oswell headed out to Paradise Harbour where a school of minke whales was spotted among the ice cliffs and icebergs.

From the next port on the journey, imaginative explorers are able to send postcards and letters from the most southerly Royal Mail post box in the world.

The following section of the cruise took travellers through the 30-mile long stretch of water known as Iceberg Alley with "incredible weather-sculpted icebergs, serene and impassive", he added.

Antarctica covers an area 58 times larger than the size of the UK and is home to 90 per cent of the world's ice, according to coolantarctica.com.
