Jordan is "no second-best pilgrimage destination" and has a history dating back to the Old Testament, a travel writer has said.
Matthew Teller, writing for the Independent, said the Middle Eastern country was "emerging from the shadows" after it had long been overlooked by travellers heading to Israel and Palestine as Holy Land destinations.
Mr Teller went on to say the country was abounding with archaeological sites that tie in with primary historical sources and the gospels and "Jordan has almost too many Biblical sites", he continued.
The Al-Ayoun Trail - a pilgrimage route from southern Turkey to Jerusalem, which follows the border of Jordan for a segment - passes through meadows, pomegranate orchards and villages where tourism has yet to make an impact and is "idyllic", wrote Mr Teller.
According to Lonely Planet, the ancient city of Petra, is "without doubt one of the Middle East's most spectacular, unmissable sights".
