Surinam in South America has been named as the continent's next eco-travel hotspot for the imaginative explorer, according to a travel writer.
Bordering Brazil, Guyana and French Guyana, a trip to one of the smallest of South America's countries is certainly "off the beaten track", wrote Andrew Westoll in the Guardian.
"There is no such thing as a tourist" he said, describing his experience at the Brownsberg nature reserve - part of the biggest area of protected and pristine rainforest in the world.
Mr Westoll goes on to say: "The traveller lives life alongside the locals and begins to feel strangely at home."
Surinam is possibly the least visited country in the continent and Mr Westoll believes it is the nearest an imaginative traveller can get to a "forgotten land".
Trips and excursions are more affordable than in other eco-tourism destinations and he adds that they are also better value.
According to the World Travel Guide, some 80 per cent of the country is covered by tropical rainforest.
