More and more imaginative travellers are heading on holiday tours to the "fascinating destination" of Iran, a travel writer has said.
"Iran is not high on most people's holiday lists," said Sarah Barrell in the Independent.
However, travel companies are reporting tours to Iran are "selling out" and have arranged extra trips to meet growing demand, she continued.
Ms Barrell recommends a visit to the National Museum of Iran, which houses a "staggering" display of ancient artefacts, hand-picked from one of the countless archaeological sites in the country - including the latest excavation at Jirfot.
Shiraz, in the south-west of the country, is "one of Iran's most seductive cities" she writes and is an "atmospheric way" of discovering ancient Persia.
Iran used to be one of the great empires of the ancient world and still bears the remains of the city of Persepolis.
According to the Guardian, the country receives more than 1.6 million foreign tourists each year.
