Imaginative travellers will find Guatemala "a feast for the senses"

Tuesday, April 28, 2009

Guatemala "is a feast for the senses" and an ideal getaway for the tourist on a budget, a travel writer has said.

"This chunk of Central America, wedged beneath Mexico and washed by both the Atlantic and Pacific, is scenically beautiful, rich in history - and very cheap," explained Alessia Horwich, writing for the Independent.

Ms Horwich recommended visitors head from the country's capital, Guatemala City, to the "best city in the world", by Wanderlust magazine, Antigua Guatemala.

For the more adventurous travellers, she suggests heading to Lake Atitla, where paragliding, rock-climbing, scuba diving and horse riding are all popular activities. The lake also offers opportunities for fishing black bass.

Guatemala is only slightly larger than England at 108,890 square kilometres, according to Lonely Planet, and it is famous for its Mayan heritage.
Large Mayan monoliths over ten metres high can be found in a tropical park in the town of Quirigua.
