Monday, February 22, 2010

Travellers who like nothing more than to explore a destination off the beaten track may want to consider heading to Turkey for their next trip.

According to the Times, the country offers plenty of hidden gems for people who enjoy discovering something new while on holiday.

It explained that Akyaka is a "beautiful" and tranquil location, offering visitors the chance to stroll through pine woods, relax on small beaches and indulge themselves in the local cuisine.

Furthermore, the publication suggested that Sovalye could be the perfect place for an adventure holiday.

"Staying on a car-free island surrounded by mountain scenery is an unforgettable experience," it stated.

In addition, travellers can go canoeing, hike the island's tracks and even explore "the remains of a Crusader castle".

Other recommended destinations included Faralya, Selimiye, Sogut, Bezirgan and Ortakent.

Lonely Planet advises visitors to the country to head to places such as Ephesus, Gallipoli and Safranbolu.
