An eco-lodge in Ecuador has been given an award for environmentally-friendly tourism, it has emerged.
The Latin American Tourism Association presented Huaorani tribe leader Moi Enomenga with the award for Best Sustainable Project of the Year, despite the lodge having been open for less than 12 months.
Huaorani people have lived in the Ecuadorian Amazon for thousands of years, between the Curaray and Napo rivers, PeoplesoftheWorld.org attests.
Once nomadic, they are now largely settled in the rainforests, where they hunt only what they need to sustain themselves, without damaging the surrounding habitat.
However, in recent times, their land has been threatened by illegal logging and oil exploration.
In a bid to combat this, the Huaorani have invited people to visit and take part in their way of life sustainably, resulting in the now critically-acclaimed Huaorani Eco-lodge.
The tribespeople are particularly knowledgeable about plants, with expertise relating to poisons, hallucinogens and medicines.
